The National Service Scheme (NSS), Sikkim Manipal University organised various Swachhata activities and awareness campaign on the Elimination and Ban on Single Use Plastic as a part of its Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign on Wednesday, the 2nd October, 2019 on the occasion of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Swachhata Hi Sewa is a national level campaign initiated by Honourable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi towards a Clean India and promotion of Elimination and Ban on Single Use Plastic. Honourable Vice Chancellor, Sikkim Manipal University, Lt. Gen. M.D. Venkatesh, Dean, SMIMS, Brig. V.K. Mehta, Heads of Institutions, Heads of various academic departments, Programme Coordinator, Programme Officers, Activity Coordinators, NSS, SMU, faculty members, NSS volunteers and other students participated in the event. The event started with a speech by Honourable Vice Chancellor, SMU who made deliberation upon the need of ban on single use plastic for a sustainable environment and called upon the gathering to put emphasis on the issue. The participants also took a Swachhata pledge before carrying out the cleanliness activities in which plastic waste was collected from the university campus in and the nearby areas which was later dumped into the municipality garbage collection point inside the university campus. After this activity, the NSS volunteers made an outreach awareness campaign by visiting the adjoining shops, restaurants and hotels and made appeals to the owners of the firms to avoid the single use plastic and distributed leaflets thereon.
