REPORT ON FIELD TRIP TO NORTH SIKKIM

FROM 03 Mar 2025 TO 05 Mar 2025

Venue : @

The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences & Liberal Arts (FHSS&LA), Sikkim Manipal University conducted a three-day educational field trip to North Sikkim from 3rd March to 5th March 2025. Altogether 15 students participated along with Ms. Manita Subba, a faculty member of the department as the accompanying supervisor. The aim of this field trip was to develop student’s research and observational skills through hands-on experience and gain practical understanding of societal effects of the development, analysing both beneficial and detrimental outcomes. The study also provided insights into sustainable practices that reconcile progress with societal well-being.

The students embarked on this trip observing North Sikkim not just as a tourist destination but also analysing its development impacts and cultural interactions from sociological perspectives. Observing both on the macro and micro levels, from simple interactions and behaviours to learning about their shared beliefs and culture.

The initial destination of the trip was Lachen, a town situated in Sikkim's Mangan district. Following an overnight stay in Lachen, the students continued their journey to the sacred Gurudongmar Lake. Adverse road conditions presented significant challenges during the travel.

The students witnessed first-hand impact of development on society, shaping not only societal institutions but also the lives of the people. The students also observed the vibrant, verdant landscape, that attracts tourists from all over the world and how the local residents do their utmost to preserve it while undergoing developmental changes. This fosters sustainable practices, ensuring progress without compromising the environmental or social well-being.

The Sociology students’ field trip to North Sikkim resulted valuable insights into the region's symbolic significance. Each interaction with local residents during the trip in Lachen to Lachung provided significant understanding of mundane life of the area.
