29th May 2025 Gangtok,
Sikkim — A comprehensive two-day faculty development workshop on Sim Begin Level
1 was successfully conducted at Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing, in
coordination with SMU Staff & Faculty Development Council facilitated by
Laerdal Medical India on 28th & 29th May 2025.
SimBegin level 1 is a facilitator
training program developed as a collaboration between SAFER simulation center,
Laerdal Medical and Laerdal Global Health. The program aims to build competence
and confidence in planning, conducting and debriefing a simulation scenario. Ideally
suited for healthcare educators and clinical trainers who are new to
simulation-based education and reflection-based debriefing. SimBegin is a
hybrid design, with a mix of e-learning, online workshops and face-to-face
workshops. The workshops involve participants of the course working in small
groups to increase interaction with faculty and learning. The program has been
well received across different cultures and contexts. It has been introduced in
over 20 countries in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia.
The inaugural session was graced by
the presence of the Honorable Vice Chancellor SMU, Registrar SMU, Co - Chair
SMU, SFCDC, Principal, Vice Principal SMCON HODs & Faculty SMCON. The
eminent resource person from Laerdal Ms. Monika Tara Educational Services
Specialist facilitated the workshop.
Day 1: The session focused on
enhancing clinical skill assessment methods through the development and
refinement of checklists and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE).
Faculty members from various departments of nursing from SMCON & Clinical
Nursing Educators from CRH actively participated in the hands-on group
activity. They collaboratively developed detailed skill checklists for core
clinical procedures including Intravenous (IV) therapy, Routes of Drug
Administration, Intubation, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). These
checklists were further refined and structured into OSCE formats using Peyton’s
Four-Step Approach—a globally recognized model for teaching clinical skills. As
part of the session, the developed
OSCE stations were run with M.Sc. Nursing students from the Medical-Surgical
Nursing department to test and refine the process in real-time. The initiative
not only strengthened faculty capacity in clinical skill evaluation but also
ensured alignment with competency-based education standards.
Day

after successful completion of online modules. This module combines
self-directed e-learning with practical simulation scenarios: Best practice
