GANGTOK, 10th September 2025: Department of Medical Biotechnology, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), in association with the Student Research Forum (SRF), SMU, organized a seminar entitled “Basics of Research and Ethics” on 10th September 2025 at SMIMS, 5th Mile, Tadong, Gangtok, Sikkim, India.

The event was organized and headed by Dr. Chamma Gupta, Organizing Secretary & Lecturer, Department of Medical Biotechnology, SMIMS, along with her team of SRF student representatives. The seminar was successfully conducted with a total of 200 participants, including graduates, postgraduates, PhD scholars, and faculty members from Medical Biotechnology, Allied Health Professions, SMCON, SMCPT, BHA, MHA, FHSS, and research scholars from all domains of SMIMS and SMU.

Dr. Rubi Dey, Advisor, SRF, SMU, and Dr. Arundhati Bag, Head of Department, Medical Biotechnology, SMIMS, were the special guests at the occasion. The inaugural function started with a welcome address by Dr. Barkha Devi, Chairperson, SRF, SMU, followed by the Guest of Honour, Dr. Muralidhar V. Pai, Dean, SMIMS & Pro-Vice Chancellor, SMU, who highlighted the importance of research and ethics.

The inaugural address was followed by a guest lecture delivered by the eminent guest speaker, Dr. Bisu Singh, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Zoology, Sikkim University. Dr. Singh addressed the gathering on the Basics of Research and Ethics, covering key areas such as the fundamentals of designing research studies, principles of ICMR guidelines, the role of Institutional Ethics Committees in safeguarding research participants, and other relevant topics. His lecture emphasized the significance of maintaining high ethical standards in research.

The lecture session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. It proved to be highly informative and inspiring, reinforcing the importance of conducting research with integrity and ethical responsibility.
